The facts
- At 9:00am PT on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, Amazon MGM Studios officially announced that a new Stargate series is in pre-production.
- Martin Gero (Stargate Atlantis, Blindspot, Quantum Leap) will serve as showrunner.
- Brad Wright, co-creator of Stargate: SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe returns as consulting producer.
- Joseph Mallozzi, writer and executive producer, also returns as consulting producer.
- The series will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios and air on Prime Video.
- The series will NOT be a reboot — signalling a continuation of existing canon rather than a full reset.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
I’ve been waiting years to write those words above. With a new Stargate series in pre-production, and with one of the key writers of Stargate Atlantis in Martin Gero at the helm, I feel confident that the new series will honour what’s come before and maybe we’ll finally get answers to how long Atlantis was actually parked in the San Francisco Bay.
If there are any tricky lore or continuity questions, he’ll have the man who led over 300 episodes of the franchise on hand and at the ready in Brad Wright. And yes, General Samantha Carter is already canon… right… right?
Who is Martin Gero?
Martin Gero, the Canadian screenwriter and executive producer, has become one of television’s most reliable genre architects.
Most notably, he created the crime drama television series Blindspot. It premiered on NBC on 21 September 2015 and aired until 23 July 2020 with 100 episodes… helllooo syndication!
After Blindspot’s success, Martin signed an overall multi-year deal with Universal Television, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios — the kind of long-term arrangement reserved for proven, high-value creators.
What’s my insanely too-detailed nerdy take?
Variety has confirmed the new Stargate will air on Prime Video, but I'm still going down a rabbit hole, because one question every fan has now is: how will we all be able to watch new Stargate?!
It’s possible the show may also carry the MGM+ Originals branding inside Prime (Amazon uses that label for certain MGM projects), but thankfully for fans, the important part is simple:
We get to watch it on Prime Video.
No windowing.
No platform-hopping.
No licensing maze.
(Fingers crossed 🤞)
A reason to feel optimistic
Martin’s work on Stargate Atlantis was often smart, character-driven, and at times, emotionally devastating. He was the writer for some of the most iconic (and my favourite) episodes including “McKay and Mrs. Miller,” “Be All My Sins Remember’d,” and the shockingly memorable “Sunday.”
Ready for another mini-rewatch. Here are the episodes Martin Gero wrote.

As someone who has spent years interviewing the people who built this franchise, of course my complete unbiased (read: completely biased) preference would have had Brad Wright in charge, but with Martin leading and Brad advising? This feels like the most aligned creative pairings we could have hoped for.
