Last week, I was invited onto the Dial the Gate & Gateworld livestream and was asked how I felt about hearing the news.
Honestly?
I wasn't sure exactly how I felt, but it wasn’t exactly excitement. I described it kind of like a numbing energy, maybe I was shocked. After sitting with it for a week, I think I felt that way (and kinda still feel that way) because there is just so much to process.
What I do know is that my favourite part is seeing the full spectrum of fan reactions. For over a year now, I’ve been reading, editing, and writing Purpose: Embracing Mental Health as a Fandom, Amanda Tapping’s crowdsourced book of fan stories. Those stories range from pure fandom goofiness to heartbreaking loss, but always supported by a friend on an internet forum, a stranger at comic con, or a mighty hug from Amanda.
When the news broke, the posts across social media reflected the stories I’ve been reading for months. It was familiar. It was beautiful. It felt like fandom coming home.
The new facts (1 week later)
Here’s what we’ve learned since the announcement:
- Martin Gero has been developing the series for 18 months.
- The pilot script was written over a year.
- Some former cast members, including Michael Shanks, were informed in advance.
Updated 25 November 2025. Read the facts from the original announcement.
Stargate Announcement Video
Consulting Producer Joseph Mallozzi’s blog & what it reveals
Fans of Joseph Mallozzi’s blog and X have come to expect a steady stream of Stargate behind the scenes sandwiched between chaotic food reviews and passionate fan musings (currently a mix of Columbo and a NCAA-style tournament of world’s greatest starship captains and their first-commands… my money’s on Spock).
And then the November 19th announcement happened.
The most prominent thing all of the creators have been saying, from Joe to series co-creator Brad Wright to new showrunner Martin Gero, is that this is not a reboot, and that makes total sense. Although most of the comments by fans have been excitement and joy, there’s a healthy amount of scepticism. “I’ll wait and see” is practically a cultural value in sci-fi fandom.
But here’s a line in Joe’s blog that made my eyebrows do the full Teal’c arch:
“A little over a year ago, [Martin] reached out and asked ‘Want to read something cool?’. That something, it turned out, was his pilot script for the new Stargate series.”
Whoa, there’s been a pilot script floating around out there… and it’s been out there for over a year?
Okay, okay, okay, having developed television previously and The Companion readers being some of the most savvy fans out there, we don’t get overly excited at the smallest hint of a rumour, but a script that’s been written over a year ago is meaningful. It means the story world’s been thought about, the characters have been brainstormed, and there’s at least a handful of ways the show can go on for several seasons... Hollywood loves a long returning series.
And the last thing that piqued my interest:
"Get ready. We’re heading through the gate one more time.
Chevron Eight is locked!"
Uhhh, Joe what do you mean by Chevron Eight is locked?! Traditionally stargates dialled with seven chevrons, but then in Stargate: Atlantis, the eighth chevron was used to dial other galaxies. And since Martin Gero is most well known for writing on Atlantis, does this mean the series centres around the place Aquaman calls home?
Or does Joe mean Chevron Eight is locked because by the time we got to Stargate Universe, they were dialling nine chevrons, so Joe really just means we’re at the penultimate step and maybe when the trailer drops then Chevron Nine is locked?
Perhaps it’s a hint that Stargate: Atlantis fan favourite Rodney McKay will make an appearance, I mean David Hewlett has said he’d love to return to the franchise.
What a class act and a wonderful fan-forward way to dial up Stargate again... https://t.co/nixpwAX1my pic.twitter.com/28KRpw2r7j

Who wouldn't want to see a return of Rodney and Ronon?
Maybe I’m an overthinking overlord and he meant nothing by it (surely not, it means we’ll have answers to Atlantis)!!!
What Joe’s post does confirm is that there is a pilot script, the plans for season one, the plot, the characters, and a series overview.
What Joe couldn’t confirm were any details about the plot, timeline, characters, and cast… but then Michael Shanks went on Wormhole X-Tremists (Dial the Gate’s sister channel) 👀.
Take from that what you will.
So, let’s do some irresponsible fan speculation
