How do I subscribe to The Companion?
There are two ways to subscribe:
Option 1: The best way to join The Companion is on our website (or click this link https://www.thecompanion.app/subscription-offers). This gives you full access to our website, iOS and Android apps (mobile phones and tablets), and members-only benefits.
The Companion membership is available worldwide.
Option 2: You can also go to the Apple App store if you are on iOS, or Google Play store for Android. Simply search and download The Companion for Sci-Fi, from there you can select the sign-up option and choose the type of subscription you want and go from there. If you go the Option 2 route, we won’t be able to deliver you our members-only benefits until you link up your account. You can do this in the Settings menu of the app.
How do I redeem my Kickstarter link & code?
Check your email inbox with the address you used for your Kickstarter account. You will have an email with the subject: “The Companion is Now Available 🚀 Here’s Your Discount Code”
If you can’t see it in your inbox please check your Spam folder.
Follow the link provided in the email and then click on the redeem button – Ad blockers may stop this button from working so if nothing happens with the button try disabling the ad block temporarily.
Copy your unique code from the email and paste it into the sign in box, then continue to follow the instructions to set up your account. You will have to enter card details to have your account validated but you will not be charged. A one time payment of £1 or $1 will be charged and then immediately refunded to you.

At launch, we’re covering the 90s which include shows we love like X-Files and Stargate SG-1, films we grew up on like Jurassic Park and Batman Forever, and anime too like Neon Genesis Evangelion. Want us to cover something else? As a member, you’ll get that chance.
I’m a member. Why doesn’t it recognise this in the app?
If you signed up through our website, please email email@example.com.
If you signed up through the App Store you need to choose your password to gain access. You can easily choose your password by clicking ‘Forgotten your password?’ on our log-in page on either the website or the app. After entering your email address, we’ll send you an email which will tell you how to choose your password. If you can’t find it please check your junk folder.
If you had one dream for The Companion, what would it be?
We’d love to deliver so much great coverage and bring so much goodwill for a franchise that we helped a studio bring back a franchise like Stargate or Firefly – no joke. Of course, this may not be possible for a live-action series with a cast that has aged (or sadly some that have passed), but there are other ways to do this such as animation or audio formats.
How do I change my account details?
In the Settings menu select the My Account button. From here you will have access to view your account details and manage your personal information.
To reset your password, navigate to the Settings menu and select ‘Sign in’ > click ‘Forgotten your password?’ and follow the instructions.
To change the email address you use to log in to The Companion, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Why are you using a membership model, why can’t this be free?
We heavily considered a ‘so-called free version’ but it would mean that the quality of content and the length of the stories would suffer. When we looked at other publications with writers we really respect, the issue was that each article might have 15 banner ads in order for it to be financially worth it. Did you know, a YouTube creator needs to get 42,000 views a day just to make California minimum wage? Sadly, that’s the reality of digital ad-funded content.
By using a membership model, one that costs you about $1 a week, everything changes. It means no 200-word articles, no clickbait, no banners. Just interesting stories and analysis.
How do I cancel my membership?
If you signed up through our website, please email email@example.com to cancel your membership.
If you registered for membership through the App Store, we’re unable to cancel your membership on our side. However, it’s easy for you to cancel the subscription. Just follow these steps:
1. Please visit the App Store on your device
2. Click on the profile icon in the top right-hand corner
3. Click on the ‘Manage Subscriptions’ button
4. Press the red ‘Cancel subscription’ text.
5. Confirm cancellation.
Unfortunately due to the App store guidelines: “No cancellation of the current subscription is allowed during the active subscription period.” However, if you have any issues, always feel free to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’re human just like you and know it can be frustrating. We’re an independent studio, so please give us some time to respond due to timezone differences.
Do you have a pet?
Yes, we have a company dog. His name is Huxley. (Ok, so he’s really Nick’s dog but he’s got a bed and everything at the office).
How can I see examples of The Companion content if I’m not a member?
In order for this platform to work and to create the highest quality stories, we do need to charge membership fees; however, we also know that sharing is caring. We’ve decided to build in a feature to allow members to share links to individual articles to their friends who are not members so our brilliant writers and podcast hosts can help spark new conversation.
I’m a member. How do I know when it’s time to renew?
You can find your renewal date in the My Account section of the app, but we’ll write to you before that date to let you know when your membership is due to expire, and whether you need to do anything to stay with us.
How do I view my app subscriptions?
You can view your iOS subscriptions like so:
- Open your Settings app on your iOS device
- Click on the iTunes & App Store section
- Click on your Apple ID
- Click the View My Apple ID Option
- Click on Subscriptions
- Click on The Companion subscription
You can view your Android subscriptions like so:
- Open your Google Play app
- Choose Subscriptions from the menu
- Choose The Companion from the list
Head over to our Privacy Page link that is in the page footer.
Troubleshooting The Companion App
- Close and re-open the App
- Restart your device
- Ensure the App is up to date as the latest version. This can be done by checking for updates in your App store
- Delete and reinstall the App using a strong WiFi signal. This will remove previously downloaded content
- Again, if you’re having issues please contact email@example.com. We know it can be frustrating.
- Clear cache and cookies on your browser. You can do this by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Delete
- Ensure your browser is the most up to date version. You can do this in the Settings option in your browser
- Try using in private/incognito mode. You can do this in your browser options
- Try a different device and/or WiFi/mobile network
Restore App Store subscriptions
Once you’ve purchased your subscription through the App Store, you won’t need to log in as your subscription is linked to your Apple ID. You may need to restore your App Store purchase, such as when you change devices. Please see below for instructions on how to do this on iPhone and iPad devices.
On our App, you can restore your subscription by:
- Tapping on any article, which will prompt a pop up
- Scroll down and click the option to ‘Restore your purchases’
- Enter your Apple ID and password
Restore Google Play subscriptions
You may need to restore your Google Play purchase, such as when you change devices. Please ensure that you have the latest version of the app and see below for instructions on how to do this on your Android device.
You can restore your subscription by:
- Opening the app and selecting any of the content on the screen
- This will prompt the paywall to come up
- Scroll down and tap ‘Restore your purchases
I am visually impaired, is The Companion for me?
From our experience working with a public broadcaster like the BBC, we always aim to be as inclusive as possible. Early testers had issues and we wanted to address this head-on. In the settings menu there is the ability to toggle the text size of Articles.
A feature we want to implement soon will be a ‘day mode’ and ‘night mode’. Finally, we are looking to create audio versions of our features so members can listen to articles rather than read them – think Audio Book but Audio Articles!
