West Side Story star Rachel Zegler and Suicide Squad‘s Viola Davis join The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
Director Francis Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobson revealed some fresh details on their Hunger Games prequel movie, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes which is based on Suzanne Collins’ 2020 book. In part an origin story for the series villain, President Coriolanus Snow, Lawrence promises “We also get to remake District 12, remake all of the Capitol, and a brand-new arena.
“You get a little background of Katniss. You will obviously get a lot of the background of Snow, the history of the Games, the history of some of the music, where songs like ‘The Hanging Tree’ actually come from.”
The cast so far contains Viola Davis (Suicide Squad) as Dr. Volumnia Gaul, the head gamemaker, Tom Blyth as the young Coriolanus Snow, and Rachel Zegler as District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird.
Lawrence added: “This is not with judgment, but Lucy Gray is the anti-Katniss. She’s a musician, she’s a performer, she’s a charmer…. Snow has never met a girl like this before.”
Other announced stars include Josh Andrés Rivera, Peter Dinklage, and Hunter Schafer.
Doctor Who writers Paul Cornell and Gary Russell, and Stargate novelists Sally Malcolm and Geonn Cannon, on the curious journey from fandom to canon.
