Star Trek Icon Nichelle Nichols Passes Away

George Takei, Wilson Cruz, and others pay tribute to Nichelle Nichols, who passed away at 89.

Nichols played Lt. Nyota Uhura in Star Trek: The Original Series from 1966 to 1969, reprising the role for Star Trek: The Animated Series, and six movies: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1984), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991).

Outside of Star Trek, Nichols worked with NASA to recruit women and people of color for the agency.

Her death was announced yesterday, by her son Kyle Johnson, who wrote:

“Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration. Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.”
