Week in Geek | Star Trek, Star Wars, and 100% Superhero-Free News from SDCC

Week in Geek is The Companion‘s weekly digest of all the latest trailers, announcements, controversies, spicy memes, and more. Not everyone has the time or inclination to sit on social media all day staying on top of this… but we do and we need to justify the time we’ve wasted.

If you’d like Week in Geek poured piping hot into your inbox every Monday, sign up here.

What We’re Looking At

Jordan Peele’s UFO horror Nope has smashed its opening weekend, booting Thor: Love and Thunder from the top spot, so we’re marking the occasion by drooling over the work of Mexican designer Agustín R. Michel.

What We’re Talking About

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard reunites The Next Gen crew. Check out the new teaser and character posters for silver fox Worf.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3, meanwhile, is going to break our brains with a LIVE-ACTION (!?)Strange New Worlds crossover (!?). How? Why? But mainly HOW?

Star Wars series The Acolyte has found its lead in Amandla Stenberg. They faced the wrath of racist twitter for playing Rue in The Hunger Games, which upset a lot of people (=racists) who hadn’t been reading the book properly.

Ronald D. Moore’s For All Mankind has been renewed for a fourth series on Apple TV. Shooting starts in August.

Sticking with Apple TV, Kurt Russell (Escape from New York, The Thing) and his son Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) have been cast in Apple TV+’ live-action Godzilla series.

Some sad news overshadowed by all the noise from SDCC, long-term 2000 AD, and DC Comics writer Alan Grant has passed away at the age of 73. If you were to pick up one story of his, I’d point you to Shamballa.

The X-Files | Frank Spotnitz Brings Doggett & Reyes to The Companion

Join writer/producer Frank Spotnitz, and stars Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish for a live X-Files reunion panel and audience Q&A on Saturday 30th July.

What We’re Watching

The man from Atlantis returns for the thunderous third and final season of SEE, starting August 26 on Apple TV.
