Week in Geek | Everything You Need to Know From Disney+ Day

Week in Geek is The Companion‘s weekly digest of all the latest trailers, announcements, controversies, spicy memes, and more. Not everyone has the time or inclination to sit on social media all day staying on top of this… but we do and we need to justify the time we’ve wasted.

If you’d like Week in Geek poured piping hot into your inbox every Monday, sign up here.

What We’re Talking About 😲

This weekend was all about Disney+ Day, kicking off with the arrival of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to the streaming service. New logos dropped for She-Hulk, I Am Groot, IronHeart, Ms. Marvel, and Moon Knight.

Some came with a bunch of new details, some with new trailers (scroll down👇), and others were our first glimpse of new shows altogether, including…

Echo, starring Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, a First Nations woman with hearing impairment and the means to kick ass, which spins off from her introduction in Hawkeye.

Agatha: House of Harkness will reunite WandaVision‘s breakout star, played by the vampy and campy Kathryn Hahn, with writer/executive producer Jac Schaefer. Missed opportunity not calling it Agatha Harkness: Dame of Darkness imo.

Animated series Spider-Man: Freshman Year, which sounds as though it’s the early adventures of Tom Holland’s MCU Spidey because Ditko only knows we need a THIRD origin story.

Secret Invasion will bring back Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos the Skrull from Captain Marvel (2019).

Animated series Marvel Zombies, jumping off from What If…?, which was confirmed to be getting a second season. Watcher this space. Hyuk hyuk.

Proof that memes now dictate release schedules, 1992’s X-Men: The Animated Series is being continued where it left off in 1997, hence the title, X-Men ’97.

Outside of Marvel, the Fox license is being squeezed to create the 18th-century-set Predator prequel, Prey, for Hulu (the first image is GORGEOUS). Hopefully, the ‘magic autism’ stays in under six feet of dirt and concrete in 2018’s The Predator. Expect it to land on Disney+ outside North America.

What We’re Watching 📺

Oscar Isaac gives good superhero in the teaser for Marvel’s Moon Knight. He’s a mercenary turned vigilante, who is either empowered by an Ancient Egyptian god, or insane. Or both.
The cask-aged tones of Ewan McGregor fill the Obi-Wan Kenobi featurette, along with concept art, and footage of Hayden Christensen sparring.
Another short and sweet teaser, this time for the short and sweet Ms. Marvel. Such a shame we can’t read Donald Trump’s impotent rage-tweets about the MCU’s Pakistani-American supergirl.
Orphan Black‘s formidable Tatiana Maslany deadpans it up as Gamma-powered lawyer Jennifer Walters in the first teaser for She-Hulk.
Baymax’s back, alright! The friendly airbag from stealth Marvel movie Big Hero 6 is getting his own series too. Which is nice, I guess.

Sci-fi fandom needs your help. Nobody else writes the deep dive articles we do. Nobody else creates in-depth interview podcasts or invites you to put questions to showrunners and stars. And nobody else treats your favorite sci-fi shows and movies like they matter – like they can save lives or change them – but we do.

None of that is cheap. Great writing costs money, original analysis costs money, and audio/video production costs money. We keep our costs as low as we can, but we refuse to compromise on quality.

We’re not backed by studios or massive media conglomerates. There are five of us fighting every second to make The Companion all that it can be. We’ll never accept paid advertising on The Companion because if we did we wouldn’t be able to write about whatever you like, the way that you like.

That’s why we need geeks like you to join us

Sign up now for a free trial. If you don’t like it, simply cancel and you won’t be charged. But if you do stay, your membership goes towards creating more of the content you love on the sci-fi shows and movies that you love.
