Week in Geek | Dune Better Watch Its Back

Week in Geek is The Companion‘s weekly digest of all the latest trailers, announcements, controversies, spicy memes, and more. Not everyone has the time or inclination to sit on social media all day staying on top of this… but we do and we need to justify the time we’ve wasted.

If you’d like Week in Geek poured piping hot into your inbox every Monday, sign up here.

What We’re Looking At

17th & Oak‘s limited edition giclée print captures all the claustrophobia of James Cameron’s Aliens on the movie’s 35th anniversary. (£26 UK if you want one – approx $35 US)

What We’re Talking About

Sad news, as 1970s Doctor Who writer and K9 co-creator Bob Baker passed away last week at the age of 82. His credits include The Nightmare of Eden, The Invisible Enemy, The Three Doctors, and The Sontaran Experiment.

Okay, now this is seriously cool. Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit, and What We Do in The Shadows director Taika Waititi has announced that he’s adapting French comic The Incal, created by writer/director Alejandro Jodorowsky and the late artist Jean Giraud, aka Moebius. The project was originally born out of Jodorowsky and Giraud’s attempt to make a Dune movie in the 1970s, and the comic went on to ‘inspire’ The Fifth Element. Peter Warren is signed up along with What We Do In The Shadows co-creator and flightless Concord Jermain Clement.

The new poster for Spider-Man: No Way Home only goes and reveals Green Goblin. Pumpkin Bombs and Goblin Gliders at the ready!

Despite a mean-spirited whispering campaign that insisted Marvel’s Eternals would crash out at the box office (weird how this sort of talk only seems to follow around movies with non-white, LGBTQ+ or female leads…), it opened this weekend to a respectable $71m in the US. Lower than its superhero rivals but beating DuneF9, and No Time to Die.

News from the dystopia, Squid Game display in a British shopping mall has caused a ruckus. I’m proud to reveal that I’ve seen the “popular singing Christmas tree” in the ‘flesh’ and it’s every bit as horrific as it sounds.

What We’re Watching

With DC doing Jared Leto’s Joker dirty, one wonders if the Snyderverse stans will transfer their affections to Marvel’s vampire antihero Morbius.

Sci-fi fandom needs your help. Nobody else writes the deep dive articles we do. Nobody else creates in-depth interview podcasts or invites you to put questions to showrunners and stars. And nobody else treats your favorite sci-fi shows and movies like they matter – like they can save lives or change them – but we do.

None of that is cheap. Great writing costs money, original analysis costs money, and audio/video production costs money. We keep our costs as low as we can, but we refuse to compromise on quality.

We’re not backed by studios or massive media conglomerates. There are five of us fighting every second to make The Companion all that it can be. We’ll never accept paid advertising on The Companion because if we did we wouldn’t be able to write about whatever you like, the way that you like.

That’s why we need geeks like you to join us

Sign up now for a free trial. If you don’t like it, simply cancel and you won’t be charged. But if you do stay, your membership goes towards creating more of the content you love on the sci-fi shows and movies that you love.
