Week in Geek | Star Trek Fans Go to War With a Game Show

Week in Geek is The Companion‘s weekly digest of all the latest trailers, announcements, controversies, spicy memes, and more. Not everyone has the time or inclination to sit on social media all day staying on top of this… but we do and we need to justify the time we’ve wasted.

What We’re Talking About

Next up in Marvel’s Disney+ masterplan the Don Cheadle-fronted Armor Wars – based on the ’87-’88 storyline where Iron Man tries to round up all his stolen tech – has reportedly tipped Yassir Lester as its head writer. A comedian, actor, and writer best known for HBO’s Girls and Showtime’s Black Monday, Lester might be the fresh voice needed to make the hoary old trope of ‘give me back my tech’ (see Whiplash in Iron Man 2) worth revisiting.

According to Elliot Page, this week marks the final week of filming on The Umbrella Academy Season 3.

In one of those ‘Hang on, how did we get here?’ moments, Ryan Reynolds has backed Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s LeVar Burton in his bid to host the game show, Jeopardy! Burton threw his visor into the ring following the departure of the recently appointed new host Mike Richards after his history of sexist, racist, and antisemitic comments surfaced. The Orville‘s Seth MacFarlane is also in Burton’s corner.

The first photos have dropped for the live-action adaptation of the 1998 Manga/anime future-noir Cowboy Bebop. The show is coming to Netflix in November and stars Star Trek‘s John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Luke Cage villain Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, and Taika Waititi collaborator Rachel House (Thor: RagnarokMoana) as Mao.

What We’re Watching

Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is out this weekend in the UK and US. (Unlike Black Widow, it’s cinemas-only so ScarJo has a right to be pissed.).

A second trailer for FX/Hulu’s Y: The Last Man, the post-apocalyptic series based on the DC Vertigo comic, has arrived along with a confirmed UK airdate – September 22 on Disney+.

Fandom needs your help. Nobody else writes the deep dive articles we do. Nobody else creates in-depth interview podcasts or invites you to put questions to showrunners and stars. And nobody else treats your favorite sci-fi shows and movies like they matter – like they can save lives or change them – but we do.

None of that is cheap. Great writing costs money, original analysis costs money, and audio/video production costs money. We keep our costs as low as we can, but we refuse to compromise on quality.

We’re not backed by studios or massive media conglomerates. There are five of us fighting every second to make The Companion all that it can be. We’ll never accept paid advertising on The Companion because if we did we wouldn’t be able to write about whatever you like, the way that you like.

That’s why we need geeks like you to join us

Sign up now for a free trial. If you don’t like it, simply cancel and you won’t be charged. But if you do stay, your membership goes towards creating more of the content you love on the sci-fi shows and movies that you love.
